Starting our journey as online sellers has been both exhilarating and challenging for us as a couple. With our shared passion for woodworking, we initially launched our products on Etsy, excited to share our handcrafted items with the world. However, as we ventured deeper into the e-commerce landscape, we quickly realized that the competition is fierce—especially in the woodworking space, where it seems like everyone has a shop.
To expand our reach, we decided to take the plunge and set up a Shopify store together. This was a whole new world for us. Learning how to navigate the platform, understand its features, and optimize our listings felt like a full-time job in itself. Recently, we also ventured into the print-on-demand space, creating funny t-shirts and mugs. This new channel has been a fun creative outlet for both of us, but it also comes with its own set of challenges.
One of the steepest learning curves we’ve faced has been mastering SEO. We dove into articles, watched countless YouTube tutorials, and experimented with keywords to increase traffic to our Shopify site. While we’ve seen some improvement in visitor numbers, the sales haven’t followed suit. This is where the frustration sets in. We see so many sellers online claiming they can’t keep up with demand, and it’s hard not to wonder what we’re doing wrong. What’s their secret sauce?
Despite the challenges online, we’ve had some bright spots. Participating in local bazaars this year was a refreshing change for us. We connected with customers face-to-face, and it felt incredibly rewarding to see people engage with our products in real-time. It reinforced the idea that we have goods that people are interested in; it’s just a matter of getting them to find us online.
As we reflect on this journey so far, we can confidently say it’s been quite a ride. We’ve learned more than we ever expected about selling online, marketing, and the nuances of e-commerce. While we may not have all the answers yet, we’re excited to see where this path leads. We know that persistence is key, and we’re committed to refining our approach, learning from every experience, and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of online selling.
Time will tell if we can turn our passion into a thriving business, but we’re here for the adventure together. If you’re on a similar journey, remember you’re not alone. Let’s continue to support each other as we navigate the ups and downs of the online selling world!
